Chapter Ten

Season realized they had entered what appeared to be the bottom of a huge cavern. He now took the lead, moving quickly, determined to distance himself as fast as he could from the snakes. He was glad Mule had had the foresight to run when she did, and hoped the snakes would be distracted by the glowing matter she left behind. He noticed that the room had what appeared to be a ramp that spiraled around the edges, winding higher and higher at each level.

The cavern was lighted, but again, Season could not determine the light’s origin. He could see crystals shining along the edges of the walls as the light reflected from their edges. The whole room glittered.

Season and Mule nearly ran around the edges of the room looking for an opening to the ramp, but couldn’t see one. Season saw no other exits from the room, so the only way to go would be up, and they needed to figure a way to get to the first level of the ramp.

They had rounded the room almost all the way back to the entrance when Mule found some crumbled steps that led to the first layer of the ramps. There were huge gaps between the steps and there was no way to climb them, so they knew they would have to jump them the best they could. Mule ran and leaped successfully over the crumbling stone, landing on the ramp, but her back hooves hit the top of the steps and crumbled them even further.

Season ran for it when he saw how easily Mule took the leap, jumping as high as he could. He didn’t think it would be too difficult because, after all, he could climb trees. He missed. The gaps in the broken stairway were now too great, and he couldn’t get a foothold.

Then he heard the hissing coming close behind him. The snakes had been following the substance falling from Mule’s feet, and caught up with him. They were also glowing with the substance, and Season briefly wondered whether they created it or ate it. He hoped that if they ate it, it was their only diet, because the thought of them eating him put him into a state of panic. Frantically, Season tried again, and this time fear took him running for the ramp as he realized that if he didn’t make it this last time, he would not make it at all.

He hit the crumbled rock and leaped as high as he could, but it still wasn’t high enough, and he slammed into the wall just below the ledge. The last of the steps crumbled below him into the midst of the snakes that came after him. But this time, Mule was ready. She reached down over the wall and grabbed Season by the scruff of his neck, pulling him up onto the ramp. It wasn’t easy because Season was not that small and she had to bite down hard to avoid dropping him, but she succeeded in pulling him to safety.
